One for the record books

On October 23, more than 16,000 people gathered in Shanghai’s Pudong Century Park  for the Amway Nutrilite Health Run.

Athletes from age four to 84 were joined by Wang Jun Xia, former women’s 5000m run Olympic champion, and Yang Wei,  2008 Olympic all-around gymnastics champion, as they ran shoulder-to-shoulder through the city.

After finishing the run, participants enjoyed a Charity Jamboree that benefitted the Shanghai Cancer Research Center.

Through Amway China’s You Run, I Donate program, each participant generated Rmb10 in donations to the center.

That’s impressive, but there’s more.

The run was accredited as the “largest scale health run” by Shanghai Big World Guinness, which records exceptional human feats – in this case, the most people gathered for a health run.

The Nutrilite Health Run has attracted 2.8 million runners in 70 cities in its 10 years. It’s been a great success in encouraging people to focus on health education rather than competition.

This year’s event was definitely one for the record books!

A little stronger

The U.S. State Department’s “100,000 Strong Initiative” has just gotten a little stronger.

Today Amway and Michigan State University announced a partnership to create opportunities for West Michigan college students to study in China through the “Amway China 100,000 Strong Scholarship.”

A total of 30 students – 15 from Michigan State and 15 from seven other West Michigan colleges and universities – will have the opportunity to study in China through the three-year program.

The partnership is the result of Amway’s commitment  to join the U.S. State Department’s “100,000 Strong Initiative” earlier this year.   The initiative seeks to significantly increase the number of students traveling to China and increase investments in the future of U.S.-China relations.

Better than ever

Two years ago Amway China launched the Amway Environmental Theme Park, a traveling exhibition offering fun, games and activities that helped  encourage environmental protection.

In 2010 the Theme Park went online with the launch of a web site that brought activities to a wider audience, while Amway China continued the offline park tour.

And this summer the Amway Environmental Theme Park was on the road again, touring 16 cities and reaching 240,000 people  – a 140 percent increase since the program began in 2009.

These numbers make the Amway Environmental Theme Park better than ever – online and off!

Artistry on Ice is back!

China’s very own world class figure skating show is back.

Taking the ice for a second year are Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo, the Chinese Olympic gold medalists who exchanged vows during last year’s debut of Artistry on Ice presented by the Artistry brand and Amway China.

Inspired by the television series Sex and the City starring actress Sarah Jessica Parker, the pair will skate to a newly themed “Art and City” show.

Earlier today at the Trends Night Event in Shanghai, Amway China shared the news that Parker will be the spokesperson for both Artistry on Ice and the Artistry Intensive Skincare Renewing Peel exclusively in the Greater China Region from September 2011-February 2012.

Artistry on Ice kicked-off earlier this week in Beijing and will continue on to performances in  Shanghai and Taipei.

A lot of cheering going on

As a kid, I tried every sport out there and my mom would tote me around the city, pack my snacks, pay my fees, and most of all, cheer me on.

Amway is doing the same thing as we sponsor teams and athletes around the world and around the world of sports.  These sponsorships include:

Badminton: In Indonesia, six badminton players wear the Nutrilite name including Men’s Double Champions Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan.

Basketball: The NBA’s Orlando Magic call the Amway Center home and their practice jerseys also sport our logo. Amway China and Amway Taiwan sponsor the Nutrilite Junior NBA tournament, a program which brings fun and healthy activities to hundreds of middle school students who compete against each other to travel to the United States to participate in NBA All-Star weekend.

Billiards: The World Pool Billiard’s Association Women’s 9-Ball Open has been sponsored by Amway Taiwan for 14 years.

Cricket: Adam Gilchrist is an Amway spokesperson for Australia.

Football: NFL MVP and quarterback Kurt Warner also works with Nutrilite and Amway North America to promote nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

Gymnastics: Amway China sponsors the Chinese artistic gymnastics team, which recently brought home 13 gold medals from the 2010 Asian Games.

Hockey:  The NHL’s Detroit Red Wings wear the Amway logo on their practice jerseys and the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins will also wear the logo at home and away.

Ice Skating: Since 2007, Amway Canada and Artistry have sponsored Skate Canada, an event that features the world’s top skaters, and Amway China sponsored Artistry on Ice in 2010 and will repeat again this year.

Running:  Marathon runner Kara Goucher is a spokesperson for Nutrilite and Amway North America.

Soccer: Nutrilite is a premium sponsor of professional Italian team AC Milan. Amway Canada sponsors the Nutrilite Canadian Championship; that decides who will represent Canada in the World Cup, and Amway Korea sponsored the Korea Republic team in last summer’s World Cup.  North America is the presenting sponsor of Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes.

Swimming: Olympic Gold medalist Libby Trickett represents our brands in Australia

That’s a lot of cheering, in a lot of different languages, going on.

Nutrilite’s Jr. NBA “All-Stars”

This past weekend the winning team from the Amway Nutrilite Junior NBA challenge, the Tigers, made their trip to Los Angeles to attend the NBA All-Star game.

Their journey began last spring when four cities in China and Taiwan held basketball skills challenges for thousands of kids between the ages of seven and twelve. Six lucky kids selected from each city were invited to a city camp where they worked one-on-one with Dwight Howard of the NBA’s Orlando Magic. The boys were then divided into two teams of twelve players each. They competed against each other in games in both Beijing and Taipei. And the winning team made the trip to the United States.

On Friday the team spent the day at the Nutrilite COH in Buena Park where they toured our facilities, enjoyed a fun-filled round of our “Color Yourself Healthy” beanbag game, and were put through the paces in a fitness session with Diane Paetz, Nutrilite’s fitness instructor.

On Saturday they played an exhibition game against the Junior NBA Clippers at the NBA Jam Session in the LA Convention Center.  Throughout their visit their biggest support came from Taiwanese celebrity, and former Asian basketball star Chen Chien-Chou, affectionately known as “Blackie” in Asia, who accompanied the team on their trip.

The highlight of the trip was spent watching the Slam-Dunk competition and then the All-Star game Sunday night. You can see more photos from the trip on Amway Taiwan’s Junior NBA Facebook page and the Global Nutrilite Facebook page.
