Earlier this month the members of the Nutrilite Scientific Advisory Board came to the Center for Optimal Health at our headquarters in Buena Park, California for their annual meeting. Our Scientific Advisory Board, or SAB as we call it, is made up of global leaders in the nutrition science and medical fields.
The annual meeting is an opportunity for the board to directly interact with our scientists to offer guidance and feedback on the direction of our research. Lots of time is spent in conference room sessions discussing our latest research and trends in nutrition science innovation. But at this meeting a larger group of Nutrilite scientists discussed their work at a poster session created specifically for our SAB members.
“Each year we strive to expand our interaction with our SAB, and this year the scientific and technical poster session enabled a full half day of one-on-one dialog between SAB members and NHI scientists,” offered Dr. Keith Randolph, who coordinates the SAB meetings.
The session captured the essence of the partnership we share with our SAB. Our scientists are constantly researching across a broad spectrum to better understand the intricacy of the human body at the cellular level. They are constantly seeking the right combination of botanical ingredients, phytonutrients, and other nutrients that can improve the efficacy of our products and help people achieve optimal health. The work they do is special, and they represent the backbone of our supplements.
But the other part of this equation is you. Because the work of our scientists, along with the SAB’s guidance, results in new product launches and continual improvement in the supplements you take each day. It is a continuation of the work of Nutrilite founder Carl Rehnborg and his discovery of the important role that plant nutrients, or phytonutrients, play in maintaining our health. It is embodied in the exacting, painstaking control we take from “seed to supplement” in the production of our products. And it is unlike anyone else in our industry.
Nutrilite is in the process of launching new, natural source bone health products around the globe. As part of our work investigating ways to optimize bone health, we have embarked upon a partnership in North America with the International Osteoporosis Foundation, or IOF. If you’re from North America and you’ve purchased the new Ultimate Bone Health Solution product, you may have noticed the IOF logo on the package.
Teaming with the IOF gives us a way to help elevate osteoporosis awareness, along with the importance of proper nutrition, weight-bearing exercise and other lifestyle choices that contribute to healthy bones. The IOF maintains different committees within their organization, including the Committee of Corporate Advisors, and Nutrilite scientist Yumei Lin represents us on this committee.
Frankly, the number of people affected by weak bones across the globe is staggering. If you visit the IOF’s website you’ll learn that osteoporosis is often referred to as the “silent disease” because of its symptomless development. You won’t necessarily realize you have osteoporosis until a fracture occurs. In fact, around the world, an osteoporotic fracture is estimated to occur every 3 seconds with 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50, at risk of suffering one.
Bones are built up during childhood and adolescence, so you actually have a limited window to build bone strength earlier in your life that goes up into your thirties. As you get older you need to take preventive action to maintain your bone strength.
Understanding the nature of this issue is one step toward resolving it. Make the right nutrition choices that include sufficient calcium and protein, get enough vitamin D, and supplement when necessary. And be sure you keep active with regular weight-bearing exercises. Taking these steps will help to keep your bones healthy and strong, reducing your risk of having painful and disabling osteoporotic fractures.

Scientists at the Nutrilite Health Institute come to work each day focused on improving our products. They use their expertise to research ingredients, test them with bio-assays, conduct clinical trials and verify they meet stringent requirements in our Quality Assurance department.
But that’s not all they do. You’ll also find them leveraging their expertise to contribute to the larger nutrition science research community.
Marc Lemay, Ph.D., is a senior scientist with Amway and expert on vitamin D. He helped formulate our Nutrilite Vitamin D3 plus K2, and he’s weighed in on our blogs in the past about the importance of vitamin D supplementation.
Marc currently is serving as the guest editor of a special “Vitamin D” issue of Nutrients, an open access journal of food science and nutrition. Read Marc’s intro to the special issue to get his latest thoughts on this important micronutient.
Plant manager James Bowman leads reporters through the nutrition products plant
Journalists love to go behind the scenes. The “hard hat” tour is always popular because media can share news on what’s happening before buildings are completed, ribbons are cut and products are produced.
That’s why we opened the doors today to our $24 million Nutrition Product Plant at our mile-long manufacturing complex in Ada, Michigan. Media toured the state-of-the-art production facility, interviewed our operations leaders and sampled the Nutrilite products that will be made there.
This is the first time Amway has produced Nutrilite products in Michigan. The plant will produce our best-selling NUTRILITE protein powder, sold by distributors all over the world. Other products to be made at the facility include POSITRIM meal replacement powder, ACTIVE 8 powder drink mix and INVISIFIBER fiber packs.
Another first is an innovative work system designed by and for employees at the new plant, including a new work schedule and long-term career path. Nutrilite employees in California worked closely with the Michigan team to transfer knowledge and processes.
For this tour, instead of hard hats, media donned safety goggles, lab coats and hair nets to tour the three-story facility.
The results are in! We’re pleased to report that our Nutrilite brand ranks as the top-rated vitamin and supplement brand within the direct selling category in a consumer satisfaction survey by ConsumerLab.com.
More than 10,000 ConsumerLab.com subscribers participated in the survey, rating more than 1,500 brands.
Our Nutrilite brand continues to be a fan favorite around the world — also chosen by consumers as one of the top three health supplement brands in the AsiaOne People’s Choice Awards.
We appreciate the public votes of approval. Earning our customers’ loyalty is the best reward of all.
If you look at the Nutrilite timeline in the appendix of Dr. Sam Rehnborg’s book, The Nutrilite Story, you’ll see that the fifties was a busy time for Nutrilite. Farming operations were expanding, a state-of-the-art research lab and quality control lab were built, and the first iteration of the butterfly shaped green plastic container to hold DoubleX was designed and created.
The marketing department was hard at work in the fifties, too. “Your Nutrilite Radio Theatre” debuted on the NBC Radio Network for the 1955-56 season. Every Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m., Pat O’Brien and Jimmy Wallington hosted the show that was a “brilliant series of original plays featuring Hollywood’s Top Stars.” There were 26 episodes that played on 172 stations across the country.
The marketers didn’t stop there, though. They ingeniously teamed with Hollywood scriptwriters and created the “Nutrilite Radio Theatre Contest” and accepted story ideas submitted from people all across the country. The winning entries were adapted and dramatized on the air throughout the season. 26 winners were flown to Hollywood for the “trip of a lifetime” and given the opportunity to appear on the radio program broadcasting their winning entry.
Imagine being in that radio studio in 1956 watching actors producing your story and broadcasting it across the country. That is truly ”Your Nutrilite Radio Theatre.”
On Sunday the winning chant in the Make Some Noise! competition played on the maxi-screen during an AC Milan home game at San Siro stadium. It was the culmination of a special contest on the AC Milan and Nutrilite Facebook pages that started in mid-October.
AC Milan soccer fans submitted videos of their original chants, ten chants were selected out of the submissions, and then the community of fans from both pages voted for their favorite chant.
And the winner… “Rosso e Nero” by Fabiano Fumerola.
It was a collaborative effort that was performed by a choir loudly singing out the chorus. Mr. Fumerola’s chant submission even received coverage in his local newspaper. It was played a total of four times in the stadium on Sunday, much to the delight of the players and the fans in the stadium.
AC Milan won the game beating Chievo Verona by a score of 4-0, so perhaps the extra encouragement helped spur the team on to victory! : )
Today in Moscow, Nutrilite scientist, Dr. Keith Randolph presented research results from two new studies at the US – Russia Scientific forum. The results demonstrate that overweight Russian adults have stress markers – biological indicators of stress – that may be linked to poor long-term health outcomes. Like their American counterparts, many Russian adults are exhibiting signs that suggest future poor heart health.
The study, co-authored by Nutrilite’s Dr. Keith Randolph, found that U.S. adults get most key phytonutrients from only four sources: oranges, tomatoes, strawberries and carrots. Phytonutrients are tiny but mighty components that may provide health benefits, including reduced risk for some age-related chronic health conditions.
Adding a variety of fruits and veggies to your plate is one way to “color yourself healthy” and increase phytonutrient intake, according to Dr. Randolph, technology strategist at the Nutrilite Health Institute.
