Source-Make-Deliver: Vitamin C Plus

Thanks to a new Amway website, anyone can see examples of our products moving through the development process, from the selection of the raw ingredients to the delivery of the finished product to the warehouse.

For example, here is the process for our NUTRILITE Vitamin C Plus Extended Release:

SOURCE: Brazil

Our Vitamin C Plus Extended Release is a plant-enhanced vitamin C supplement made with natural acerola cherries grown at Amway’s agribusiness operation in Brazil. Acerola cherries are one of nature’s most concentrated sources of vitamin C. Natural antioxidants from lemons, oranges and grapefruits also are included in Vitamin C Plus Extended Release. Our  Brazil farm features 4,102 acres where we grow and process organic acerola cherries, watercress, picao preto and other tropical herbs and fruit.

MAKE: California, U.S.

The plant ingredients in Vitamin C Plus Extended Release come from dried whole foods, such as acerola cherries, lemons, oranges and grapefruit. For acerola cherries, our process includes an early harvest, the selection of improved varieties and color-sorting for fruit that is highest in vitamin C. We also use a gentle concentration process right on the farm, the majority of which is completed via reverse osmosis. This process only removes water, not phytonutrients, and avoids heat to minimize loss of vitamin C. The powder is packaged in sealed drums and shipped out to our manufacturing plant in California to be used in our products.

Computer-controlled scales measure the exact weight and amount of each concentrate powder. The final mixture is compressed into tablets, coated with a special solution for easier swallowing and inspected closely for cracks or chips. Finished tablets are sealed in specially-designed containers to maintain freshness.

DELIVER: Several markets, including Georgia, U.S.

NUTRILITE Vitamin C Plus Extended Release is offered in several markets, including the United States.  Deliveries to locations in the U.S. are made primarily by truck to four warehouses throughout the country. Shipping times vary based on location. Vitamin C Plus Extended Release arrives in the central part of the country in roughly one week. Off-shore deliveries made by sea to our center in Hawaii can take up to four weeks.

Home technology

Did you ever wonder how Amway, which got its start selling soap and nutrition products, became a number one seller of home technology products?

Last year, eSpring became the  world’s number one selling brand of home water treatment systems according to Verify Markets study of 2012 global sales, while ATMOSPHERE is the world’s number one selling brand of home air treatment systems according to Verify Markets study of 2011 global sales.

That’s quite an accomplishment in just over 50 years. And it was a concerted effort. In the last 20 years, we grew our research and

development team from those specializing in cleaning, cosmetics and nutrition to include more than 100 scientists researching home technology.

It’s a wonderful story of innovation, dedication and “Aha!” moments that you can read at the Amway Global Newsroom.

Under the pepper tree

Imagine you’re sitting under the giant pepper tree in Lakeview, California, (shown here in our 80th anniversary logo) with Nutrilite founder and visionary Carl Rehnborg.

As employees, distributors and visitors often did, it was the place to find Carl; to read, talk and discuss the important topics of the day.

Our 80th year of Nutrilite certainly deserves the center of our attention. With many plans in the works, we’re reflecting on our roots, saluting eight decades of amazing growth and focused on our future.

Through his groundbreaking scientific work, Carl was a pioneer in nutrition research. A keen observer, he discovered and unlocked the power of plant-based nutrients, now called phytonutrients. His introduction of Double X, likely the first multivitamin/multimineral supplement marketed in North America, is still our flagship product.

Today, thanks to Amway Business Owners across the globe, we are ranked as the #1 direct selling company in the world, and Nutrilite is the world’s No. 1 selling brand of vitamins and dietary supplements.

What’s next? There’s so much more. We’re building on new inspirations, meeting product demand with new farms and facilities, and leveraging new research and products for the future – all to drive scientific discovery, to unlock the power of phytonutrients and to help people achieve optimal health.

And this year we celebrate all that with special events across the world. We’ll tell you about them here and on Facebook and Twitter. You can search for all our anniversary coverage by using the hashtag #nutrilite80. We look forward to sharing our celebration with you all year long.

Progress at Spaulding

The new $81 million Amway manufacturing facility on Spaulding Avenue in Ada, Michigan, USA, is taking shape just down the street from our World Headquarters.

Walls, flooring, plumbing and ventilation are mostly in place. As those aspects of the job are being completed, leaders are now shifting their attention to the equipment that will actually make the soft gel capsules and tablets for our Nutrilite products around the world.

This week, several members of the engineering team – along with staff from manufacturing and maintenance – are meeting with soft gel equipment manufacturers to complete something called a Factory Acceptance Test.

The manufacturers have created a full production line at their site, setting up the equipment in the same way that it will be installed at the Spaulding Avenue facility. They will use the same or similar raw materials that we will use to simulate a full production run. This extensive review is part of making sure that everything is right, and, if not, fixing any issues before the equipment arrives in Ada.

All other equipment is undergoing similar testing as well, and the efforts don’t end there. Once the equipment arrives, more  tests and trials will be run over several months to ensure the highest standard of quality and validation.

Getting it right is what Amway is all about. The Factory Acceptance Test is one more step in helping us get there. Check out more photos of the progress at our Amway Facebook page.

Visible Progress

Amway’s manufacturing expansion is well under way.  The seven-site, $375 million project is geared toward building an infrastructure that will continue to provide quality nutrition, beauty and home products to the world for decades to come.

Recent visitors to construction sites in the U.S. states of California, Washington and Michigan have seen great advancements, as have visitors to the Tamil Nadu, India site.  While there are several months left before these projects begin manufacturing products for consumers, the visible progress is exciting.

And, you don’t have to be on the ground to see the progress. Photo albums of some of the sites are updated regularly, allowing everyone to track the developments. New photos have recently been added to the albums for Buena Park, California, and our new tablet and soft gel facility down the street from our World Headquarters in Michigan.

As work progresses, we’ll soon add photos of our other projects, including China and Vietnam.

It is an exciting time at Amway, as we grow to meet growing demand worldwide.

Full circle

Nutrilite Founder Carl Rehnborg’s research is coming full circle.

It was the early 1920s, while Rehnborg lived in China, that he made the connection between overall health and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

He noticed it in people, and he noticed it in cows. That observation was key to developing what is now the world’s number one selling vitamins and supplements brand.

Last week Dr. Sam Rehnborg, Carl’s son and president of the Nutrilite Health Institute, went back to China to attend a groundbreaking for a new research and development facility in Wuxi, China.

The Amway China Botanical Research Center will focus on traditional Chinese medicine, conducting research on organic farming and the health and beauty benefits of the extracts from Chinese herbal medicine.

The center will be built on 115 acres and include a research lab, a high-end greenhouse and a section that will be open to the public to demonstrate our “Seed to Supplement” method and our organic farming practices.

Part of the ceremony included burying a timecapsule with the placement of the cornerstone. That time capsule is slated to be opened on the 100th anniversary of Nutrilite. So, check back in 2034! Check out a few more photos from the event at our Nutrilite Facebook page.

Age-defying diet

Successful aging means preserving your capacity to function and enjoying good health. Your nutritional status is a key predictor in that.

A diet for successful aging begins with nutrient dense foods. This helps maintain a healthy weight and provides vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. It also limits the amount of added sugars, refined grains and saturated fats.

So, what should be on your plate? Here are five tips:

  • Fill half with fruits and vegetables: Strive for at least five servings of fruits and veggies daily. That’s easy to do when half your plate is filled with brightly colored vegetables like tomatoes and broccoli or deeply-colored fruits like berries. Produce packs in vitamins, minerals and fiber but also phytonutrients that may help slow the aging process.
  • Fill one-quarter with lean proteins: Good examples are fish, poultry, lean beef, low-fat dairy products, beans or tofu.
  • Fill one quarter with whole or enriched grains: Fortified cereals, brown rice, whole wheat pasta and whole grain breads are good choices.
  • Choose your drink wisely: Fluids like water and low-fat milk should be your primary beverages.
  • Consider supplements: The vast majority of adults do not meet 100% of their nutrient requirements. Consider a broad-based vitamin and mineral supplement as well as antioxidants, phytonutrients, calcium, magnesium and vitamin D.

Aging is unavoidable, but by choosing your foods and supplements wisely, you can do your best to age successfully!

Meeting of minds

After years of meeting at the Nutrilite Center for Optimal Health in California, last week Nutrilite’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) held their annual meeting, for the first time, in Ada, Michigan, home of Amway’s World Headquarters.

“Each year we look for new ways to interact with our SAB, and this year hosting the board in Ada allowed them to see the full range of our scientific capabilities and research on the campus of our World Headquarters,” said Dr. Keith Randolph, technology strategist for the Nutrilite Health Institute. “It also provided a forum to discuss ways to bridge the science behind our nutrition and beauty products.”

While in Ada, the nine esteemed international scientists toured onsite research labs, engaging with our scientists.  Our researchers presented current and future work, while the board offered insight to the latest trends in nutrition science. The work of our scientists, along with the SAB’s guidance, results in the creation of effective and innovative products to meet the needs of our Amway Business Owners and consumers across the world. One could say it’s a meeting of the minds.

For Nutrilite, the science behind our products started nearly 80 years ago when our founder, Carl Rehnborg, discovered how the compounds that occur naturally in fruits and vegetables — called phytonutrients — help us achieve our optimal health. Today at Nutrilite, opportunities are fostered by actively bringing our scientists and our advisors together to forge the future of product innovation.
