Competitive Generosity in India

Friday, 14 February, 2014

How do you keep your people engaged in their local communities, when they are spread out over multiple geographies representing many different needs?

In a word: competition.

Ten years ago, leaders of the Amway Opportunity Foundation in India set up two awards, or “Rolling Shields” to recognize the best efforts at the local and regional level.

They were looking for the programs that generated the most volunteering, most giving and the greatest impact on the local communities.

The plan worked. Each year, we see bigger and better partnerships across India. This year, the Southern Region took both prizes.

The regional prize recognized partnerships among 12 organizations focused on orphanages and helping the visually impaired. Efforts included hiring visually impaired staff to work as telephone customer service representatives; building computer centers to encourage skills-based learning; fundraising events that involved fashion shows and cricket competitions; and skills workshops involving Amway Business Owners and staff.

Within that same region, the Hyderabad office won the local prize. This means they will get to keep the trophy for the year, and were recognized at a national Amway Business Owner form last month.

Congratulations to the winners, and to everyone who is a part of this positive competition!

The Amway One by One Campaign for Children was named the winner of a Gold-Level “Stevie” Award in the 10th Annual International Business Awards.

Nicknamed the Stevies for the Greek word for “crowned,” the awards were presented at a gala awards banquet in Barcelona, Spain.

Be Great!

Tuesday, 17 September, 2013

Last week, our local Boys & Girls Clubs held their annual Be Great Gala and celebrated 75 years of helping youth in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

We were excited to be honored with a Be Great Business Award in honor of our longstanding partnership with the organization, our employee volunteer participation, and the leadership Amway executives have shown in board service and event hosting.

Candace Matthews, Amway Chief Marketing Officer, accepted the award and told the story of Carl and Edith Rehnborg, founders of Nutrilite, who founded the first Boys & Girls Club in Buena Park, California, where Amway and local employees still give their time and resources today.

But it’s not our legacy of leadership that makes this anniversary a special occasion. It’s the legacy of young leaders who have passed through the doors of Clubs in Grand Rapids and around the country, and have overcome challenges to reach their potential, and just be great!

Thanks to Lisa Hunter, Amway executive and Boys & Girls Club board member, for sharing this story.

Award for achievements, challenge to do more in Korea

Monday, 19 August, 2013

At a festival that drew more than 5,000 social workers, volunteers and community leaders from all over South Korea, Amway was recognized with an Achievement Award by the Korean Association of Social Welfare Centers.

Deajon City Mayor Yeon Hong-Chul delivered an inspirational speech to encourage greater efforts to help children who have been orphaned or abandoned, or just need extra support from their local communities.

Amway volunteers can often be found at social welfare centers, and the Achievement Award recognized the impact they have at both the local and national level.

Congratulations to Amway Business Owners and staff in Korea, and thank you for your generosity and commitment to children!

A gold standard for supporting youth in Singapore

Tuesday, 13 August, 2013

About this time last year, we published the story of a program in Singapore that had been consistently raising money since 2002, helping youth in crisis.

In recognition of these efforts, the Singapore Children’s Society (SCS) recently presented Amway with its Gold Award.

SCS operates homes for youth that have been displaced from their families, they conduct enrichment programs, and they provide social services for struggling families. Their work is a combination of preventative and intervention services that is making a difference.

Congratulations to our colleagues and friends in Singapore!

More on the awards can be found on the SCS website.
