Lip Tips with ARTISTRY Automatic LipLiner Pencil Holder

Throw out everything you’ve learned from the 80’s and 90’s about lip liner – the lip harshly drawn in a bold color, providing an actual “outline” for a lighter shade of lipstick on the lips is a trend of the past!
In pleasant contrast, today’s lip liner is best used by accentuating and defining the lip line, while blending seamlessly with the lip color.

ARTISTRY offers three neutral shades of lip liner, to be used in conjunction with the ARTISTRY Automatic LipLiner Pencil Holder: Pink Nude, Dusty Rose and Spiced Wine. From subtle to dramatic, each shade offers a different look, as well as options to mix and match with your lip color.

3414 - ARTISTRY® Automatic LipLiner Pencil Refills & Holder

Lip liners are great multi-tasking tools as they are useful as both a base for lip color or as an adherent lip color used solo.

ARTISTRY Automatic LipLiner Pencil’s fine tip allows for lip definition, and its creamy texture will not tug or pull at the lip surface. Instead, it glides on effortlessly and prevents feathering and bleeding of darker lip color into the fine lines of the mouth.

When applying lip liner, the rule of thumb is to follow the natural line of the lip and importantly, avoid using too heavy a hand! To extend the lip line for a fuller, plumper lip, line the outer edge of the lip (or to minimize an overly full lip, line the inside of the lip line).

To achieve a nude/natural look, apply ARTISTRY’s Pink Nude LipLiner to the lip line, and then lightly fill the total lip surface with Pink Nude, giving you a lightweight but color-enhanced look that will last. Top with a lip gloss, such as ARTISTRY Sheer Coverage Lip Gloss, and you’ve got a natural, healthy and glossy glow!

Remember, creamy lip color (lipsticks and glosses) may wear off from eating, drinking and talking, but lip liner has true staying-power. By using a lip liner on the surface of your lips before your lip color, you’ve given your lips a strong color base that will remain, even after your lip color has worn off.

So line those lips, fill in with lip liner as a base, top with a quick coat of lipstick/gloss and see for yourself!

Earth tones are a significant influence in makeup, clothes and accessories for spring 2012 style.  Natural textiles of leather, wood, feathers and metal are major components in belts, shoes and handbags.  Soft neutral-color palettes of gray, peach, blush, cream and nude from Donna Karan and Michael Kors, for example, take on a modern chic influence in fashion.  Makeup paired with this organic style-approach is fresh and pretty – a no-fuss look that radiates and glows.

For a fresh modern take on the natural look, we always want to make sure our skin is looking its best.  Use Artistry essentials or Time Defiance 3-step skincare systems morning and night to maintain healthy skin.  Try Artistry Intensive Skincare Renewing Peel to unveil fresh glowing skin 1-2 times per week.  Lastly use an Artistry Eye Crèmes to hydrate under and around the eye area day and night.

Your face should now look clean and bright.  Apply Artistry essentials Concealer under the eye to hide dark circles, lift the eye and cover any imperfections.  Next use Artistry Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 over the face for sheer light-weight coverage.  Tinted Moisturizer evens out the skin without looking like makeup, while adding sun protection and a natural glow to the skin.

Eye makeup this season will be smoky, subtle, and pure.  Begin by using a wash of Fusion Eye Colour all over the lid and blended into the crease of the eye.  Then take Bone Eye Colour and place it under the entire brow to highlight and add definition to the brows.  Apply Rich Eye Colour with essentials Eye Liner Brush as close as you can to the lash line on the top and bottom of the eye giving it a soft smoky defined look.  Finish the eyes with only one or two coats of Artistry essentials Mascara.  You want the lashes to appear feathery and soft.

Cheeks should have a soft contoured appearance with just a slight stroke of Rosewood or Sun Kissed Cheek Colour.  Dust very lightly along the cheek bone to just add a little definition.  Follow by applying 3-D Face Powder to the cheek bones in Shimmer Coral for touch of sheen and radiance.

Stain lips with a touch of Subdued Lip Colour for a nude look.  Finish the lips by using Light up Lip Gloss in Champagne to the center of the lips for added shine.

Hair should look very natural down with soft waves or placed in a tousled bun for windswept easy going style.

This spring get back to nature in style with earthy influences sure to make a statement where ever you go!

You have five minutes to meet old friends that are in town for the holidays……

First use Artistry Eye Colour in “Starry Night”, apply over entire lid starting at the lash line and blending to the brow.   Use Artistry Eye Colour in “Drift”, apply on the lower lid, starting at the lash line blending up to the crease.  Apply a soft line for eyeliner using the new Artistry Eye Liner in Ebony and lots of black mascara.  For foundation, use your color in the Artistry Tinted Moisturizer for a quick application.  For your blush, use one of new blushes from the Artistry “Lavish in Cashmere” collection and keep lips a soft neutral like the Artistry Lip Gloss in “Pink Shell”.  Grab you purse and you are out the door.

You have five minutes to meet your friends for lunch………….

Choose the Artistry Essential Makeup Kit that is compatible with your skin tone.  The kit comes in light, medium and dark and contains all of the coordinating products from an eye shadow quad with colors that also can be used for your blush color to a mineral foundation with all of the brushes that you will need to create a look in five minutes.   You are done and ready to start thinking about what is on the menu.

You have five minutes to greet unexpected guests this evening……….

Apply Artistry Ebony Eye Liner pencil along lash line and smudge to soften the line (use the little smudge applicator on the opposite end of the eye liner applicator).  Blend Artistry Eye Colour in “Spiral” starting at the lash line and blend to just above the crease.  Pop a little Artistry “Starry Night” just under the brow bone.  Lots of black mascara!  For foundation, use the Artistry Tinted Moisturizer and apply Artistry Mineral Foundation over the top to set the foundation and give you additional coverage that evening makeup requires.  Use one of the beautiful blushes that are available in the “Lavish in Cashmere” collection, they have a slight bit of shimmer that really adds a soft glow in evening light. Use one of the Artistry Lip Gloss Sheer Coverage such as Pink Ice for a soft lip color.  Whew, you just made it before the doorbell rings!

You have five minutes to meet friends after work for a get together……….

Reapply your concealer to get rid of those circles under your eyes that can happen from a hard day’s work.  Freshen up your mascara and reapply your blush.  Use the Artistry Lip Gloss Full Coverage in Ruby Red and you are ready!

Wow, we did it.  Hope these tips help when those little makeup crisis’s arise.  The key is to have the products handy to create “emergency” makeup.  It’s really simple and all you need is Artistry Essentials Makeup kit, Artistry “Starry Night”, “Spiral” and “Drift” Eye Shadows, Artistry Tinted Moisturizer in you correct color, a blush from the “Lavish in Cashmere” Collection and a couple of lip glosses.  If you have this makeup wardrobe, you will have every occasion covered even if you only have five minutes.

Fall Eye Color

Why is it we all think summer is a laid back, slower pace, fun loving season when actually it is one of the busiest time of the year with vacations, school’s out, play dates, weddings, back yard grill outs, the list goes on and on.  Whew!  It is no wonder we yearn for shorter days, cooler weather, sweaters, hot apple cider and time by the fireplace.  We need fall to recuperate from summer and prepare us for the busy upcoming holiday season.

To me, fall is a time for light, easy makeup.  I love to see a fresh face, neutral eyes and lips with blush that looks like you have been out raking leaves.

First, think skin care by revitalizing your skin and do a 14-day skin treatment with Artistry Time Defiance Intensive Repair Serum.  This treatment has Deep Nourishing Complex and restorative enzyme that boost the skin’s natural ability to repair past damage. Your skin will be prepared to move you into fall/winter skin care routine. The other great part of this treatment is that the effects last up to 3 months so you only have to do this treatment 4 times a year!

When your skin looks great and has a healthy glow, the last thing you want is to cover it up with a full foundation.  I love the look of Artistry Tinted Moisturizer.  Great, light weight coverage that evens out the skin tone but never looks like foundation.

For eyes, use  Artistry Eye Colour in the color Bone over the entire lid, starting at the lash line and blend up towards the brow bone.  Blend a little of Artistry Eye Colour in the color Fusion into the crease.  Then apply the new Artistry Automatic Eye Liner in Ebony along the lash line and apply lots of black mascara.

For cheeks, I really like the Artistry Lavish in Cashmere Cheek Colour in Soft Rose or Soft Pink.  This blush has great color with a little shimmer that gives your skin a soft glow without being too much, even for most casual occasions.

For lips, the new Artistry Lip Gloss in Pink Shell, is a perfect finish for this look.  It is such a great color for everyone.  This color will be the one you want to carry in your pocket because it goes with everything!

This look is so easy, works for occasions from hayrides to pumpkin doughnuts and coffee with friends.  You will always look your best!

So here’s to mulled cider, pumpkins, jeans, sweaters, great boots and great makeup.  Happy Fall!!!

Red Lips for Fall

I just got back recently from Fashion Week in New York City and there were two things that jumped out at me. The first was all the great shoes! Everyone had fabulous shoes! The second was red lips. Seeing that this is a blog about makeup and not shoes, let’s talk about doing red lips.

The first step is to choose a perfect red for you. There are blue reds, such as wines, and burgundy colors, warm (yellow) reds such as brick reds and Scarlett that is true red. In an earlier blog, I wrote about how to choose the correct lip color by applying the lip color and then looking at your eyes. If your eyes look bright and awake, that is a great color for you. If your eyes look tired, you need to choose a color from a different undertone in the lip color.

Next, you want to choose the finish of the lip color. Do you want a matte (dull) finish, shiny finish or really glossy look? Just remember that all finishes will need to be reapplied but the glossier finishes will have to be reapplied more often so if you are looking for longer wearing color, choose a matte finish.

Once you have decided on the color and finish, you need to get a lip liner that matches the lip color exactly. To get more wearability, apply the lip liner over the entire lip before you apply the actual color. This will not only help the color wear longer, it will help prevent the color from “running”.

If you are not sure you can wear red lips, take heart, almost everyone looks good in some kind of red. Now that you know how to choose the color for you and the finish, let’s get you comfortable with red lips. The formula is important. For a more sheer color, choose a gloss or sheer formula and for fuller coverage, choose a popular formula in a regular lip stick. Take a look at several Artistry Lip Colours in Rouge, or Stunning. A great new gloss color just introduced is the Artistry Lip Gloss in Ruby Red. I found this color looked good on almost everybody. Artistry Lavish in Cashmere Lip Colour in the new Pomegranate is a sheer finish for the person who  is more comfortable in a less intense coverage.

Whatever color and intensity you choose, enjoy red, it is a great fall (winter, spring or summer) color that will work for you!

Going Nautical

Nautical, yacht-inspired looks are hot this season and the trend is carrying on through the fall season too. Navy, sailor stripes, and clean crisp white airy fabrics are not just for a trip to the French Riviera. Makeup compliments this style with a bold classic feel and casual whimsy details.

As with all fashion trends it is best to choose one centerpiece and compliment with your own classic items.  For instance, a navy military inspired coat with gold buttons is your trend piece.  Pair it with your favorite pair of jeans, a white classic tank or T-shirt, neutral flats, gold bangles, and hoop earrings to accessorize.

This goes for your makeup too.   The main statement in the nautical look is the crimson lips, and all the other makeup should be paired down, sheer, classic, and easy.

Use a color like Rouge, Beaute, or Stunning Artistry Lip Colour as the highlight for your lips.  Apply with your favorite liner for a bold look, or alone to just stain your lips.

Compliment your glowing skin with Artistry essentials Mineral Foundation it gives sheer lightweight coverage and an airy luminous finish to your skin.

Define your eyes with Capri or Steel Artistry Eye Colours brushed lightly over your lash line, or wet the shadow with Artistry essentials Eyeliner Brush and line your eyes for a more polished look.  Finish the eyes with a few strokes of Artistry essentials Mascara.

Lastly give a slight glow to your cheek bones with Rosewood Artistry Cheek Colour.  It gives just enough flush to your cheeks to look like you’ve just been slightly windblown.

Make the nautical style your own. Just keep it easy and fresh with simple classic pieces, and bright bold lips.  It’s a look great for everyday, a night on the town, and really never goes out of style!

It’s official.  I am a married woman.

I learned so many things on my big day that I am just itching to pass on to future brides.  All of that prep, primping, spraying, blotting and stressing… was it all really necessary?  Some of it, yes!  Some of it… no way.

Here are the 5 key learnings from my wedding day beauty adventure.

1) When it comes to your hair, do some serious research.  I was all about budgeting, cutting costs here and there and going for a more “minimalist” approach.  However, I went to a stylist that had a stellar reputation, did an incredible job while testing out different looks, and worked wonders on the day of.  In fact, when I woke up the next day for our 6 a.m. flight, my hair STILL looked good!

2) Don’t use any heavy skin care treatments right beforehand.  You never know how your skin will react! I used Artistry’s intensive skincare renewing peel about 4 days prior.  I knew ahead of time that this product has not irritated my skin whatsoever, but I still wasn’t taking any chances since my skin is a bit on the unpredictable side.  My face was glowing and smooth for makeup application!

3) Makeup.  Korey isn’t a fan of a face full of makeup.  I’m not either.  I wanted him to see me walking down the aisle, and not some overly made up stranger!  My makeup look was minimal with a soft smokey eye and a pink lip.  Definitely take your time on your skin prep and foundation as that’s what you’ll really notice in pictures!

4) Upkeep.  It was a HOT DAY.  As soon as we all walked outside for pictures, we melted into a bridal party puddle.  To touch up my makeup afterwards, I brought along concealer (to cover up any runaway eyeliner), some translucent powder (for that 90 degree “glow”), a soft pink blush to freshen up my complexion, and my lip color of choice for the day (Spring Trend Collection Bloom In Colour Lip Colour in Plum Blossom - LOVE IT!).  If you are a big emotional baby like me, don’t forget to wear waterproof or water resistant mascara!  This all fit easily into my small clutch.  Anything extra I brought ended up unused.  Less is best!

5) Lastly, with all of the months of stress and planning, don’t forget to steal a moment with your new hubby, take a deep breath, and take it all in.  If you don’t,  there’s a good chance that it will all be a blur and you won’t get to enjoy what all that preparation results in.  This is the most beautiful part of the day.

Good luck to all of you up and coming brides – I hope your day will be as magical as mine was!  Now… to figure out what to do with my time now that it’s over… :)

My best friend/maid of honor and I! (Can you tell it’s 90+ degrees??)

Can I wear those great, bright summer lip colors?

The answer is, yes you can!  The trick to using the bright corals and pinks is to bring them into your comfort level. Take a few minutes to get this right and you will be hooked on summer brights.

First you need to choose the right shade and the best place to start is nail polish.  You heard me right, nail polish.  Try several colors like bright pink, coral and orange and see which one looks the best with your skin tone.  Don’t panic because these nail colors will look great on your toes with those kickin’ strappy sandals.   Don’t forget the melon colors because they look good on almost everyone.  There are also some mauve tones that can be in the bright category.

Next you need to decide how intense the color can be and still be comfortable for you to wear.  Let’s face it, the right bright color looks good on everyone, it is just a matter of being out of our comfort zone.  No one wants to feel like their lips are the first thing that enters a room.  You may want to adjust the intensity by first applying a clear gloss before you apply the lip color.  This trick washes out the color so it almost becomes a blush for the lips, depending how much gloss you use.  If you want to lessen the intensity of the lip color a small amount, reverse the application to applying the lip color first and gloss second.  This will leave the color a little more opaque and brighter.

If this is a little too much work, try all of the great new formulas in lip color.  Take a look at Artistry’s Bloom in Colour Collection lip colors in Apricot Blossom or Plum Blossom.  These are great examples of bright colors that are in a sheer formula anyone can wear and feel comfortable.  Formulas like these wear longer than a gloss but are sheer and easy to use.

Lip Gloss is another answer.  You can wear them really sheer or bold depending on your mood.

Another trick is to apply the lip color with your finger by patting the color on your lips.  This gives you a great stained look that is very subtle but noticeably there.

Experiment with these techniques and find the one that suits your style.  Don’t cheat yourself out of the bright tropical colors of summertime because we all know it is the best time to not take ourselves so seriously and things that are not quite the right fashion statement for the other three seasons is okay in summer!

Feelin’ Lucky!

It probably wouldn’t surprise you, but I am a fashion & beauty magazine lover!  This is just one of the many reasons that I am ecstatic that one of my absolute favorites, Lucky Magazine, not only features ARTISTRY lip shine in a hot summer shade, Scarlet, this month (check out page 121), but also contains a beautiful full page ad for our new ARTISTRY intensive skincare renewing peel (page 136).  It’s on shelves now – check it out!

Incredible magazine, incredible products.  We think they make a pretty great pair – how about you?

Spring Break – All You’ll Need!

Spring Break

There may not be any signs of “green” popping up just yet, but I am proud to say we’ve been able to see the ground now for over a week! What does this mean?! Spring is FINALLY here!

This also means many of you lucky readers will be heading out of the in-between seasons muck and into a warm tropical paradise.  I can’t say that I’ll be quite so fortunate this spring, but I definitely have some recommendations for products for you to tote with you during your Spring Break excitement!

We all forget just how sensitive our skin can be after being cooped up for the long winter months or even if we just haven’t been exposed to excessive sunlight in quite a while.  Bring and use SPF, plain and simple!  Make sure there is SPF in your daily face lotion or cream, supplement it with 25 or higher while outside and reapply frequently throughout the day!

Throw some of your favorite lip gloss in your beach tote!  You’ll already be radiant from the warm sunshine and long days at the beach.  If you don’t want to give up any of your lounge time to primp, swipe on a layer of shimmery color and call it good. You’ll look beachy and fantastic!

Leave all the heavy eye makeup behind.  Grab your favorite mascara and a  pale golden eye color.  You can use the eye color as a highlighter on your glowing skin as well!

All you are going to really need is a beach towel and some sand.  Leave all the excess products at home!

Happy and safe travels to you all!  Bring me back a souvenir :)
