The hottest Spring Summer Fashion 2012 Show was in New York at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Prestigious designers, world renowned editors and super stars were all the buzz. Being a makeup artist at the Artistry Beauty Lounge, I found one common denominator in some of the questions that I encountered. “How does one keep their eye liner from smudging or transferring?” To many of us in the makeup field, this is a concern that is frequently discussed. Unfortunately, there is no magic answer but there are tips and techniques you can put in place.
The best option would be a waterproof eyeliner. There are times though, when we don’t have access to waterproof cosmetics and there may be times when our favorite color isn’t available in a water-resistant formula. I would like to suggest some steps you can take to obtain the longest wear possible.
Your daytime regimen will also include your eye cream. Here is where you have to be your own skin care expert. We have no oil glands underneath the eye. That is where we typically begin to show the first signs of aging. It is also the thinnest skin on our body. The appropriate under eye skin care is of the upmost importance. However, too much eye cream will tend to make your bottom eyeliner smear. A lotion versus a cream during the day might be a better option, since our skin does repair at night you would then want to use the Time Defiance Eye Cream.
Applying the eye cream on the orbital bone will be sufficient. When your body temperature warms up your eye cream will travel up where it needs to go. Also, avoid the eye cream on the lid during the day. (It may cause your eye shadow to crease.)
When you’re applying your Artistry Automatic Eyeliner Pencil, a great way to put it on is always be sure to line the top of your lid. Keep it nice and tight to your lash line for a natural classic look. Next taking a flat brush such as Artistry essentials Eyeliner Brush, dampen it with water. Place it in a deep pigmented eye shadow, such as Artistry Expresso, Steel, or Capri. Be sure to tap of the excess powder. Using the brush, press it over the top of your pencil liner, pushing it into your lash line. The powder sets the pencil liner.
When doing the bottom, you may want to skip lining with a pencil altogether if your liner transfers. Eyeliner pencils contain wax to make them glide on easier. If you want to line the bottom you can do the same steps as above or just use a little powder to sweep along the lash line.
In case you missed it, some fabulous Artistry holiday looks were featured on our local WOODTV8 eightWest program on December 10th. Our incredible makeup artistry, Luba, presented some party ready tips with our latest and greatest Artistry products and demonstrated on our very own (and gorgeous), Lindsay!
We thought we'd reshare some of these great tips since the holidays are literally around the corner -
* Red Lips are a perfect holiday accent! Try our Fall Trend lip gloss in Perfect Red * Dull winter complexion? Spice it up with a sweep or two of the 3D Shimmer Powder in Coral Shimmer * Tired, dry eyes? Keep a essentials Replenishing Eye Cream in your purse or at your desk for refreshers throughout the day!
Holidays are fun and maybe even too much fun sometimes! Too much fun can mean that all of the good habits you worked on so hard all year will be forgotten. It happens to the best of us. The good thing is that there are a few easy things you can do to look like everything is under control.
First of all, no matter how tired you are, you must always take your makeup off before going to sleep, even if you are not going to apply your nightly skin care products. This simple step helps to prevent clogged pores and it will also rid your skin of the environmental pollution you have been exposed to all day. In the long run it will slow down the breakout of collagen and elastin in your skin.
When sleep is limited and the dark circles are permanently there, concealer is your best friend. To make sure that it lasts throughout the day apply it on top of your eye crème. Don’t rub, just pat it gently into the skin and don’t forget the area by the inner corner of the eye. Eyeliner that is darker than the colour of your eyes will make you look less tired and more awake as well.
If you have been naughty and forgetting to treat your skin properly, masque might be a quick “pick me up” for a tired looking skin before a big holiday party. Most people have combination skin type: oily T-zone and normal to dry everywhere else. Use a clay based masque to absorb the oil in the T-zone and a hydrating masque on the rest of the face as well as on the neck.
If you’ve participated in some outdoor activities and it caused your skin to become angry and irritated you can calm it down by treating it with some good old olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil contains essential fatty acids that are very similar to those found in our skin. It is a gentle and calming moisturizer and it makes a great treatment for your cuticles too.
Which brings me to the hands that can be an age giveaway. If you live in a cold climate, never leave your house without gloves and if you live somewhere warm and sunny use a hand crème with a sunscreen during the day. Make sure to apply the same anti-aging products from your face to your hands at night.
If all else fails, the only thing left to do is to discover your inner movie star and wear supersize sunglasses indoors! You will look chic and mysterious!
Between juggling a career, family and relationships, your 30s can be a very busy time. Simplify your beauty routine by going back to the basics.
1. Apply concealer to brighten and camouflage 2. Stick with neutral colors for an easy, polished look 3. Add a sun-kissed glow to eyes and cheeks with bronzer 4. Define lashes using black mascara 5. Polish lips with a sheer gloss or creamy lip colour 6. Line eyes in black or brown for an easy-to-achieve evening look
In your 30s skin begins changing quickly, becoming thinner and the cell turnover isn’t happening as rapidly.
7. Continue with a regular skincare routine – cleansing, toning, and moisturizing day and night. Because of changes in your skin you may want to switch to a moisturizing skincare system. 8. If you’re not sure about your skin type or want to start incorporating some anti-aging products into your routine, take our online skin assessment. By answering a few questions it will recommend your ideal products. 9. Because cell turnover is slowing down, incorporate a treatment with Alpha Hydroxy Acids or a natural alternative like sugar or oats to provide the skin with daily support. 10. Expression lines become more defined in the 30s from repeated facial movements. Look for an anti-aging product that is created specifically for this type of facial line. 11. Sun damage begins to surface in the form of discolouration. Look for a brightening product to address this concern. 12. Exfoliate your skin a couple of times a week or look for an at-home microdermabrasion system.
Your 30s are a time to define or redefine your style with key statement pieces and fun accessories.
13. With your career in full swing start investing not only in your clothes but also a shoe wardrobe. You’ll want a pair of tall leather boots, classic pumps, comfy ballet flats and maybe a trendy ankle boot. 14. Start looking for structured dresses that will play up your figure at work or out on the town. 15. Have fun with accessories! It’s great to buy classic pieces but you still want to show your personality. Add colour to your outfits with fun shoes, handbags and jewelry. 16. With your busy lifestyle comfort is key. Look for jeans that still flatter your figure with lycra or stretch so you can do all of your running around without worrying about your jeans losing their shape. 17. Go bold with a few statement pieces in your wardrobe. Think a red dress or animal print pumps. 18. Invest in a pencil skirt. It will flatter your figure, look perfectly professional for the office, and make you feel beautifully stylish for a date night.
Following the right steps for skin care is crucial! Each step prepares your skin for the next incredible product. With everything that's available and right at your fingertips, it’s tempting to purchase an exiting new product only to discover that you’re not quite sure where it fits into your daily regimen.
This is the official ARTISTRY™ approach to great skin – straight from the mouths of our experts!
Follow these steps daily, both morning and night!
1. Cleanse your face and neck, twice, with your ARTISTRY cleanser. Double cleansing insures that you whisk away every trace of dirt and makeup, leaving your skin fresh and free of debris.
2. Tone your face and neck with a cotton pad that has been saturated with your selected toning formula. This step removes all remaining traces of cleanser. It also restores your skin to a normal and balanced pH level, making it receptive to the next important step.
3. Treat your skin with the products selected for your particular needs. Target fine lines, discoloration, loss of elasticity, blemishes or uneven skin tone in this all-important step. Light-as-a-feather ARTISTRY products are best absorbed by clean, balanced skin. Apply them sparingly to face and neck; they won't feel heavy or greasy.
4. Pamper the eyes. Using the tip of your ring finger, dab eye crème under each eye and around the outer corners.
5. Final step. Moisturize and protect your skin with a moisturizer containing sun protection to halt moisture loss and damage from dry external conditions and UV rays. ARTISTRY moisturizers are designed to provide just the right amount of hydration whether your skin is dry or oily. Many contain specially-formulated complexes which enhance the effects of ARTISTRY products and have all been tested on sensitive skin. However, if sensitivities still exist, a formula without SPF is offered.
Once or twice a week:
Indulge yourself with a relaxing facial masque. Remove your makeup, cleanse your skin, slather on one of the technologically-advanced ARTISTRY masques and put your feet up. You'll benefit from an extra boost of skin-enhancing action, whether you need deep cleansing or super moisturizing. After 20 minutes, remove the masque, cleanse once more, and proceed to tone, treat and moisturize.
My question is, how many of you knew that the treatment products are applied before your moisturiser?
What does cleansing your face at night really do for your skin?
This is a question that we all know the answer but sometimes our schedules make us feel like we can skip this beauty routine step once in a while.
Cleansing your face at night has, of course, the obvious benefit of removing your makeup. It's my opinion there is nothing worse than waking up in the morning with last nights mascara all over your face and pillow.
Yes, you are right that removing makeup is one reason to cleanse at night but the hidden reasons are equally important. All day long, your skin is bombarded by pollution, dirt and debris called environmental aggressors that can cause all kinds of problems such as breakouts, irritation and loss of clarity. These are all things that cause the skin to age so I guess you could say skipping this step also helps age your skin.
Another benefit of night time cleansing is your night time skin care products work more efficiently. Even if you have had a day that you have not worn makeup and just your moisturizer, you still need to cleanse your face at night to remove your days worth of environmental aggressors. Night time products are designed to work on clean skin using the body's higher temperature that occur during sleep.
Let's make a commitment that we are always going to cleanse our face at night even after the busiest of days and benefit with better skin, better sleep and no more mascara stains on our pillow cases!
Our "Spa on Wheels" has been all over the country visiting Miss America State Pageants. It has been a great time, because it is always nice to see young women with a love for beauty – inside and out!
The interesting thing about these trips has been interacting with the contestants and visitors of the pageant. Most of them are already experts in a lot of areas of skin care and beauty. We enjoy finding tips or how tos for each one that they may not of heard before. This ritual has actually turned into a game called “Stump the Artist.”
“Stump the Artist” happens at every pageant, usually during one of the lunch breaks. It is a time for the girls to sit back and relax during their grueling preliminary schedule. The objective is simple – they ask us questions until they can finally stump our Artistry Brand Ambassadors. The winner receives a gift bag filled with Artistry products.

I hope all of you had an amazing Mothers' Day. As a fairly new mom, Mothers' Day has taken on a new meaning for me. This year, as I sat filling in my Hallmark card, I began to think of all the things that I really wanted to tell my mother. She has helped me in so many ways and as I looked back over the years, I realized that some of my favorite memories of my mom had to do with learning one of her many secrets to being a successful woman and mother.
As the memories began flowing, I realized that some of the most valuable lessons my sisters' and I have learned from my mother are now our best-kept beauty secrets. Hardly a day goes by that someone does not compliment how shiny and healthy our hair is. Little do they know that our hair health is a result of years of my mother training us to avoid shampooing our hair every day. Let me tell you that I fought this fact all the way through high school when I believed that my 14-year old friends new better than my mom. But, at some point we let her advice sink in and now we all agree that our mom definitely knows best.
Do you have any best-kept beauty secrets that your mother handed down over the years?
I am so excited to be able to share with Artistry’s followers, this interview I did with my mother, Lavern Cameron, who has been such an inspiration to me. On this Mother’s Day, don’t forget to tell your mom, aunt, sister, anyone who is a mother how much you appreciate them! Raising a child in today’s world is a challenging job, and mothers everywhere deserve our love, respect and sincere gratitude!
Check out the interview with my mom; I’m so proud to be her daughter:
1. What is the most difficult part about being a mother? Being a mom is more challenging than difficult. I say that because every day brings something new. The most challenging thing is giving each child a little part of you every day so as to give them something they can hold onto forever. 2.What is the most rewarding part of being a mother? Being able to sleep all night… just kidding! Being able to assist and guide your children in helping them to realize their individual God given potential. Allowing them to develop to the best of their ability so that they can grow into the person God intended for each of them to be. 3.If you knew what you know now as a new mom, would you do anything differently? I don't think it was intended for us to know then what we know now as moms, but for us to take that wisdom we learn and deposit it into the future generation by passing it on to our children so they can use it to help raise theirs.
4.If your kids could only take one lesson from you, what would you like that lesson to be? To pick and choose your battles wisely and to not sweat small things. Remember that you are a gift to the world and that the difficulties in life are gifts designed to cause you to reach your fullest potential. 5.What have you learned from your kids? To forgive quickly, exhale and dirt won't kill me! 6.When you have no time left in the day, what is your go-to quick meal? Telephone and delivery 7.What makes you feel relaxed? Knowing that I have done and been who I am supposed to be everyday of my life. 8.What is the one thing you can put on that makes you feel beautiful? A kick-butt pair of shoes! 9.If you could offer moms out there any piece of advice what advice would that be? Allow your children to be who they are. Never compare your children to their siblings or anyone else. Stop burdening them with your expectations for them, rather help them to develop into themselves. Finally, when their decisions aren't always the best and when ramifications are hard, use those times as teaching moments rather than an opportunity to pounce on them. They are already feeling the effects of their decision. During those times they need guidance and the voice of wisdom. Learn the art of listening to their silence. 10. What have you learned being a mom? That there is no greater responsibility than to be entrusted with another life. Being a mom is the most important position a woman can have and every woman who has been blessed to be a mom should know how important their contribution to this world is. After all, we are responsible for raising presidents, professional leaders etc… but more importantly future mothers and fathers. 11.What inspires you? Faith in God, music, friends and the melodious sound of laughter.
