When it comes to your skin, there are many habits that can get us on the naughty or nice list.  Skin is a sensitive organ and needs healthy environments and good routines to maintain its glow and vitality.  Are doing what it takes to maintain healthy youthful skin that looks rejuvenated for years to come?

The Nice List

Use these sure fire ways to insure great skin through a healthy lifestyle and good skincare habits.

Sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher is a must for good skin.  Apply Artistry Essentials or Time Defiance Day Time moisturizers with SPF 15 to the face, neck, and chest regardless of the weather conditions.  Eliminating most of the UVA and UVB rays from penetrating the skin will prevent premature aging caused by the damaging rays of the sun.

Sleep is your body’s way of renewing and resting every cell in your body.  Insuring to get eight hours every night will benefit you and your skin.  When your body gets its adequate amount of sleep it will release good chemicals in the body which builds new cells and tissues.  Your skin will look stronger, healthier, and rejuvenated.

De-stressing your life is very difficult to do in our society, but is necessary for good health as well as piece of mind.  Take an extra 10 or 15 minutes just for yourself in the morning and at night to just relax, meditate, and unwind.  I know you deserve it!

Eating well will serve as a positive benefit to your skins health.  Choose foods rich in color, vitamins, and antioxidants such as berries, dark leafy greens, and even a little dark chocolate.  Yum!

Naughty List

Bad habits are extremely difficult to break, but by doing the necessary hard work, you can really make huge changes with the appearance of your skin and overall physical wellbeing.

Smoking for an extended period of time can age you by years.  Smoking essentially reduces the blood flow to the skin, and breaks down collagen and elastin levels decreasing skin strength and flexibility.  Premature lines and wrinkles become deep and defined and can make you look much older than you really are.

Drinking Alcohol once in awhile like red wine can actually benefit your skin.  However, excessive drinking dehydrates you and your skin making skin appear dry, dull, and increase the appearance of fine lines.  Alcohol can contract and break vessels in your skin causing redness and irritation.

Forgetting the Neck and Chest is easy enough to do, but they too show those unsightly sunspots and wrinkles just like the face if we don’t take care of them!  Use the same Artistry cleanser, toner, and moisturizers with SPF daily as you do to your face.  This will insure your glowing youthful skin is not only from the neck up!

Tanning can lead to premature aging with wrinkles, fine lines, and sun spots.  There is no such thing as a safe tan!  Skin under the exposure of ultra violet rays becomes tan; however these damaging rays can lead to sunburn, and cause you to look older than you actually are.  Get your warm glow by self tanning lotions or bronzers and stay out of the sun.

Skin shows the all naughty and nice things we do to it, it is like opening Pandora’s Box, what you put in you get out.   This year you are worth it; you deserve to be on the Nice List by being good to yourself and your skin!

The seasons change and so does your skin…….

Fall is here and winter is fast approaching.  Even in the most tropical climates, we all go through a time of year that we have dryer, cooler air around us and with that seasonal change, our skin experiences changes also.  These changes can trigger a need to change up your skincare as well as some adjustment to your makeup.

When the air is warm and humid, we go to light weight skincare and foundation that is more comfortable during these seasons.  Then the season changes and almost overnight, our skin isn’t feeling as supple as it did the day before and our foundation seems to just sit in the surface and that natural glow we are trying to get, goes away.  These are all signals that we need to adjust our skincare products and routine to make up for that lack of moisture in the air.

Here are some suggestions that will make a difference and will bring your skin back to that same condition we loved in the warmer months.

For normal to oily skin types:

If you are using a skincare routine that consists of basic skincare such as Artistry Essentials Balancing Skincare System, try substituting the Artistry Essentials Balancing Lotion at night for the Artistry Hydrating Lotion.  This little adjustment will give your skin a moisture boost without adding too much oil and give that smooth texture back.

For Normal to dry skin types:

Use the Artistry Essentials Hydrating Cleanser and remove with a tissue instead of rinsing it off.  If you feel a need to use water to remove the cleanser, use only warm or tepid temperature water.  Never use hot water as that really promotes dry skin.  The same is true when showering, only use tepid temperature water.  Hot water will only make your skin much dryer and uncomfortable.

Anti Aging routine:

I know many like to go into a skincare routine with products like the Artistry Time Defiance Day Protect Lotion SPF 15 and the Night Recovery Lotion that contain anti aging ingredients in the warmer months.  Switch to the Crème formula of products like Artistry Time Defiance Day Protect SPF 15 Crème and the Night Recovery Crème.  You will still get the anti aging ingredients but these formulas are richer and will provide the much needed moisture for dryer skin.

To treat areas of dryness or patches of dryness, use an essential oil product that is made up of natural oils such as Artistry Essentials Moisture Plus.  This type of product is also good for areas like cuticles, elbows and feet, anywhere you experience extra dryness.  This product is great even on oily skin types.

All Skin Types:

Exfoliation is even more important in the dryer months.  I love an easy, quick exfoliator that is the type that is a peel such as the Artistry Intensive Skincare Renewing Peel because it does not cause the skin to turn red and over stimulate the skin but still is effective.

Foundation:

If your skincare routine is working, you may not have to adjust your foundation but many times I like a fuller coverage foundation in the cooler, dry months.  You may want to switch from a tinted moisturizer to a foundation that is also moisturizing such as the Artistry Hydrating foundation or the Artistry Time Defiance Firming Crème Foundation, which contains anti aging ingredients that deliver more moisture into the skin.

Eye Cream:

The eye area is probably the most noticeable area that the effects of less humid weather show the most. For day time, I like an eye cream that I can carry with me and can be applied over your makeup as well and under.  I carry the Artistry Essentials Replenishing Eye Cream with me wherever I go.  It’s packaged in a portable tube and is like a big drink of water for your under eye area that can be applied anytime either under or on top of your eye makeup without disturbing it.

If your skin is showing signs of dryness, flaking, red or feels tight, it is signaling that it needs a little help from you so I hope these tips will help you keep your skin glowing and beautiful all year round.

Spring Break – All You’ll Need!

Spring Break

There may not be any signs of “green” popping up just yet, but I am proud to say we’ve been able to see the ground now for over a week! What does this mean?! Spring is FINALLY here!

This also means many of you lucky readers will be heading out of the in-between seasons muck and into a warm tropical paradise.  I can’t say that I’ll be quite so fortunate this spring, but I definitely have some recommendations for products for you to tote with you during your Spring Break excitement!

We all forget just how sensitive our skin can be after being cooped up for the long winter months or even if we just haven’t been exposed to excessive sunlight in quite a while.  Bring and use SPF, plain and simple!  Make sure there is SPF in your daily face lotion or cream, supplement it with 25 or higher while outside and reapply frequently throughout the day!

Throw some of your favorite lip gloss in your beach tote!  You’ll already be radiant from the warm sunshine and long days at the beach.  If you don’t want to give up any of your lounge time to primp, swipe on a layer of shimmery color and call it good. You’ll look beachy and fantastic!

Leave all the heavy eye makeup behind.  Grab your favorite mascara and a  pale golden eye color.  You can use the eye color as a highlighter on your glowing skin as well!

All you are going to really need is a beach towel and some sand.  Leave all the excess products at home!

Happy and safe travels to you all!  Bring me back a souvenir :)

Adventures in Shaving: Getting the perfect Tolsom shave

This is the fourth and last installment of Nick Katsarelas’ shaving posts

I know all about the benefits of the TOLSOM® line of men care products. After just four weeks of using the five products, clinical studies show a:

  • 48% improvement in skin smoothness
  • 73% improvement in ingrown hairs
  • 75% fewer nicks and cuts
  • 88% improvement in skin hydration
  • 91% improvement in skin clarity – which means your skin looks even, bright and luminous.

However, I admit that the only TOLSOM product I used was the Facial Cleansing Foam. I was stuck on products I used for years, and was willing to leave well-enough alone. Nicks and cuts? Sure, I’ve had a few. I always figured that’s what happens when you drag a sharp object across your face. You know the saying:  If you play with fire, you’re gonna cut yourself eventually.

When I was asked to write the shaving blog posts, my marketing friend Marsha supplied me with the rest of the TOLSOM line. That was two weeks ago. So for the past 14 days, I’ve followed the steps below. And I feel the difference. The Shaving Gel gives me a smooth shave. The After Shave Splash feels good. The Skin Smoothing Gel and lotion leave my skin feeling smooth. And you know what? No cuts or nicks in 14 days (and counting). I’m sold.

Just follow these five easy steps for the perfect TOLSOM shave

Step 1: Wash your face and neck with warm water and TOLSOM Facial Cleansing Foam to help open pores and remove the oils that block water penetration. Your beard hair is as tough as copper wire, so warm water causes hair to expand, making it softer and easier to cut.

Step 2: Apply TOLSOM Shave Gel in small circles to raise the beard hair. Using a sharp razor, shave in the direction of your hair growth, going with the grain. Use soft, gentle strokes. Rinse the razor often with hot water to avoid nicks.  (Although you may think you get a closer shave if you shave against the grain, you are actually causing the razor to pull the skin, which could result in ingrown hairs or razor burn.)

Tip: Change your blade once a week.

Step 3: Rinse with cool water, and pat dry. This will close pores. Splash on TOLSOM After Shave Splash on your face, not just on the shaved skin. This toner, which has minimal alcohol content, will help replenish the skin’s moisture.

Step 4: Apply a small dab of TOLSOM Skin Smoothing Gel to your face. It uses an exclusive, patent-pending, non-acidic technology to enhance the skin’s natural exfoliation process.

Step 5: Apply the TOLSOM Skin Protection Lotion with SPF15. Men typically have more sun exposure than women, so using a moisturizer with SPF 15 is important.

So there you have it: Five easy steps for a perfect TOLSOM shave.

Guest blogger Nick Katsarelas is an editor in the Integrated Marketing Services dept. at Amway Global.

Here’s my disclaimer, right from the get-go: I’m not a doctor, nurse, medical assistant, medical student, phlebotomist (a person trained to draw blood), sketchotomist (a person trained to draw pictures), EMS guy, or anything like that. While I’m at it, I’m also not a professional bass fisherman, firefighter, alpaca dealer, or forest ranger. I’ve neither talked nor dressed like a pirate, I’m deathly afraid of clowns, and the only time I hitchhiked (I was 13 and with friends), we were picked up by my mother. The tongue-lashing afterwards was one for the books.

But I digress. The point is, the information below I’m not going to be responsible for, because I’m not a doctor, nurse (see above). OK? Agreed? Here goes:

The cut You’ve showered, washed your face with TOLSOM® Facial Cleansing Foam, lathered up with TOLSOM Shave Gel, and your shaving experience is going just swimmingly. You’re humming La dee da and thinking pleasant thoughts and everything is peaches and cream and fun and games and ice cream and cake and suddenly BAM! you cut yourself! Oh, man! you think in your head, but probably not in those words and probably very out loud. Now what?

Survey the damage The first thing you do is determine the scope and severity of the cut. Consult the following chart, which can be found at www.WouldntYouKnowIt?ICutMyselfAgainAndNowImBleedingHelp.com.

  • The “wimp”: No blood. Just a little red skin. You’re awfulizing again.
  • The “nick”: It’s the smallest of the cuts. Stops as soon as it starts. Kinda like a Kia, or an old Datsun.
  • The “forrest gump”: A bleeder that’s v-e-r-y  s-l-o-w.
  • The “Uh oh!”: “Uh oh!” is right, pal! You have some mending to do.
  • The “BP”: A gusher. Notify the Coast Guard. Seek medical attention immediately.

Solutions? A quick online search generated the following tactics to stop the bleeding. Note: Unlike most of this blog and large parts of my résumé, I’m not making this up: petroleum jelly, witch hazel, bathroom tissue, ice cubes, cayenne pepper, salt and water, talcum powder, styptic pencils, cold compresses, finger pressure, hydrogen peroxide, tea bags, anti-perspirant, super glue (no joke), corn starch, lip balm, flour, and baby oil. (And you can bet someone out there is using L.O.C.)

The consensus The fact is, there is no consensus. I didn’t find any single, this-works-all-the-time solution. Should you experiment? Keep doing what you’re doing? I don’t know. But I’ll tell you what works for me: As gross as this sounds – and I’m serious here – I apply a little bit of saliva to the cut. I may have to dab the affected area with a tissue and repeat if I’ve got an “Uh oh!” or a “BP.” But it seems to work. I guess it’s the healing power of saliva. So next time you hear someone saying something bad about spit, tell them that you know a guy who puts it on his face SO KNOCK IT OFF! On the other hand, I may want to patent this solution (“Nick’s Spit Kit,” I’m thinking) so mum’s the word, huh?

Adventures in Shaving: The history of the beard

This is the second in a multi-part series on shaving by guest blogger Nick Katsarelas.

The first beard in recorded history belonged to Adam. Historians have pieced together the following conversation between Adam and Eve.

Eve:                Eww! That is seriously grossing me out!

Adam:             What! Where!?

Eve:                On your face! I noticed it yesterday! And now it’s growing!

Adam:             Oh, that? It’s just my Buick Riviera.

Voice from the clouds: LOL! The word is beard.

Adam:             Beard. Right. I knew it started with a “b.” Whatever. It’s so raven.

Eve:                Really? Raven? Try it’s so pharmaceutical.

Voice from the clouds: OMG! The word is stupid.

Eve:                All these new words! This vocabulary stuff is a killer!

Adam (singing): Macho, macho man …

Eve:                Dude. Seriously? Look around! You got no competition. What difference does it make whether or not you’re macho?

Adam:             I’m looking around, girlfriend, and you know what? I don’t see anything to shave with.

Eve:                Well, then let me tell you about the TOLSOM® brand of high-performance skin care products for men. Formulated with the exclusive T-10 Complex of eight moisturizing and two oil-controlling ingredients, this complete line guarantees results in only four weeks.

Adam:             Tolsom, huh? Will it work?

Eve:                Would I steer you wrong?

Adam:             OK. I’ll bite.

(The next day:)

Adam:             Wow! I got such a clean shave! The Facial Cleaning Foam conditioned my skin. The Shave Gel makes my face feel moisturized. The After Shave Splash tones my skin. The Skin Smoothing Gel rejuvenates it, while the Skin Protection Lotion with SPF 15 protects my skin from damaging ultraviolet rays.

Eve:                Adam, you’re looking so … metrosexual!

Voice from the clouds: Wow! Nice! I hadn’t figured that one out yet. Metrosexual. It has a nice ring to it. So is that two words? Hyphenated?

Eve:                I’m thinking just one word.

Voice from the clouds: Considerate it done

Adam:             Eve, you’re da bomb. Thanks a bunch.

Eve:                No prob. Even though Father’s Day is Sunday, June 20th, consider it (patting her tummy) an early Father’s Day gift.

Adam:             Wow! We’re gonna have a bazooka!

Voice from the clouds: You mean baby.

Adam:             I knew it started with a “b.”
