Tips for a Healthier Halloween

Working for AMWAY and NUTRILITE has definitely made me more health conscious. I have to admit that before this year, our Halloweens have not been the healthiest. But, there is always time to change, and this year my family is  ready for a healthier Halloween!

What kind of changes are we making? Well, with a LOT of research, I have found the following tips for making your Halloween a little less scary (and sugary) for your little ones:

1. Make sure that your kids eat a large, healthy meal before heading out for Trick or Treating. Sending your kids out with a full tummy will  help them resist the temptation to overindulge.

2. Set a limit before Trick or Treating. Setting expectations about how much candy your kids can eat while Trick or Treating will help them be more choosy about what they eat and when. This tactic will also help you stay strong and really think about how much candy is too much.

3. Encourage children to donate a certain amount of candy. Start a tradition in your family of donating half of the candy received during Trick or Treating. Many people offer their children a penny or nickel for each piece donated or a toy for a certain amount donated. My son is used to donating during the holidays, so I plan on just asking him to do so. We have chosen to send our candy to Operation Gratitude, an organization that sends care packages to troops oversea. The candy will soon become part of a care package sent overseas to a soldier that couldn’t be home Halloween – and that is enough to make anyone happy to donate pieces of their precious Halloween stash!
