This is definitely the busiest time of the year for me and for most people I know.  A single day may start off at the post office, then on to work, a Christmas luncheon, more work and then a Christmas Choir concert that night.

The holidays are a busy time of the year full of interacting with people whether at work parties, family celebrations, charity events and school functions.  Here are some tips to help maintain good energy levels during the holidays.

Take a break! Take a few moments during the day and relax.  Refresh your mind and spirit with an occasional break, a walk or some deep breathing.

Eat Healthy! Your diet plays a major part not with just your general health, but also in maintaining energy all day long.

  • Introducing healthy snacks such as nuts or dried fruit will help you get through a long day.  Pay attention to all the nutrients like iron that helps with energy production in the body.
  • If reaching for an energy drink, don’t go with those that are laden with sugar and empty carbs, try one of my favorites, XS Energy Drinks – available in 15 tasty flavors with no sugar and no carbs.

Exercise! Going to the gym can be more useful than a nap.  Exercise can increase energy levels and fight fatigue.  Try Nutrilite’s Rhodiola 110 dietary supplement to help increase physical endurance and mental focus when you exercise.

Laugh as much as possible – my favorite way to boost my energy and my attitude.  My father’s Rotary club had a song he often sings to this day to cheer us up… “Smile, and the world smiles with you, sing a song.  Don’t be weary, just be cheery, all day long.  Whenever your trials and your tribulations and your cares, seem to be more than you can really bare.  Smile, and the world smiles with you. Sing a song.”

Have a wonderful holiday full of energy!

Well, we’re just running the gamut these days with posts from my teammates.  I love it!  Today I’d like to introduce to you Diane Van Hoven, perhaps our team’s biggest advocate for living a healthy, holistic lifestyle…

One of my favorite movie lines of all time is from Indian Jones – The Last Crusade where right after the bad guy blows up the wise ancient knight states, “he chose……poorly”. Do you ever feel like you chose poorly after attending a holiday party?   Well I have good news for you! If you follow an eating plan before the party you’ll have a much better chance at feeling great when it’s over.  Here are my top tips for handling eating at the holiday parties:

  • Bring a healthy dish to the party.  I recommend fresh colorful veggies with hummus or green onions wrapped in low-fat cream cheese and a thin slice of turkey.
  • Be ready to defeat the dreaded buffet.  Take a small plate, fill it once with all your favorite items and then stop yourself from going back for more.
  • Lay off the sauces.  Most sauces just add fat and extra calories so avoid these.
  • Watch your beverage choices.  Just one 10oz margarita has 550 calories, about the same as a McDonalds Big Mac.  Instead choose a zero calorie option like sparkling XS Energy Drink or water with a twist of lemon or lime.
  • Never skip breakfast.  It really is the most important meal of the day.  If you’re in a hurry I’d recommend the Nutrilite Cinnamon Bun bar.  It provides 21g of protein and only 1 net carb.  A great way to start your day.
  • Take control of your eating right now by following one of the daily meal plans found in the Nutrilite Weight Management Program.  The meal plan will help you learn about proper portion control and eating the right amounts of protein, whole grains, daily and healthy fats.  The more you know, the easier it is to make the right food choices.
  • Drink Tea.  Remember the food isn’t the most important part of the holiday gathering; it’s sharing time with those you love.  So grab a cup of herbal tea, curl up by the fire and chillax.

If you follow these tips you will be the one who can proudly say, “I chose…..wisely”.  Cheers, to your good health, the best is yet to come.

About the writer: Diane’s passion in life is to understand and leverage nutrition for better health.  She is the Senior Brand Manager with Nutrilite and XS Energy. She is married with 2 children (ages 20 & 14) and loves to water ski, scuba dive, and take pictures.
